Greed Titles & Content Graphics

February 21, 2020 Capture Account

Capture created the titles and motion graphics work on director Michael Winterbottom's film Greed and when we pitch on film or TV work, we always look for the design and overarching aesthetic to come from the story, rather than just try and make something 'cool' looking. We'd much rather create something creative meaningful and fitting to the actual story. Thankfully Greed provided our team at Capture with a multitude of ideas which in turn we could present to the director.

As you’ll see from the reel of our work above the hints of fuchsia used in the graphics were inspired by a key scene from the film and also subliminally connected with the production design and costume departments work. In total we completed around 6 minutes worth of montage sequences in total.

Greed blog Logos.jpg

We came up with the split-screen idea to swiftly convey the key information and story points Michael and his editor wanted to get across. Within these split-screens we introduce the motif of a fashion designer’s cutting lines to support the film's backdrop to the fashion world.

Michael at the film’s premiere at the BFI London Film Festival.

All of this work culminated with the 'end doc' sequence of the film which highlight's key facts the film-makers wanted to make.

After all our hard work the team at Michael Winterbottom’s production company Revolution, kindly invited us to the film’s premiere at the BFI London Film Festival!

HireHand Walk & Talk Shoot

HireHand_bannerimage.jpg

This month our friends at HireHand came to us with a brief and script for a Walk & Talk promo to help promote their new crowdfunding campaign. HireHand connect businesses with people who are available for short shifts to help out businesses at their peak times and with the early success that the company has had, they were looking for investment to help the company grow globally.

We shot on location in Hoxton, East London and teamed up with long time collaborator and steadicam operator Max Rijavec as well as sound recordist Jassim Jaffer who we first worked with on our short drama Killing Thyme.

But the real star of the show was HireHand’s CEO Scott Erwin whose impeccable memorisation of the script and animated on-camera performance (including singing!) made for a fun shoot.

Watch the video below to see how the final piece turned out.

New Rules Music Video Shoot

June 9, 2019 Capture Account
New rules logos v2.png

We had the privilege of making the first ever music video for Modest! Management’s band New Rules, which we shot in London on a sun-lit Sunday.

Modest!, who have previously managed acts including One Direction, were looking for a lo-fi performance led video. Our concept involved several locations around London, starting bright and early in Greenwich.

The shoot was partially set in a studio but mainly on location, which is always a risk weather-wise, but we were really fortunate on the day with sunshine and blue skies, particularly in the morning.

This photo below, taken from our recce just a few days earlier, shows the effects of the heavy rainfall that luckily went away in time for our shoot.

Cutting at Capture - Muscle

January 21, 2019 Capture Account

The Capture edit suite is once again a hub of activity, this time home to Gerard Johnson’s newest film, psychological thriller Muscle. The film starring Cavan Clerkin and Craig Fairbrass centers on Simon, an office worker working a dead-end job he isn’t good at whose life is turned upside down by his very hands-on personal trainer Terry.

This is Johnson’s third film, following on from the acclaimed Tony and Hyena, all three are written and directed by Johnson.

We were thrilled to come abroad on the project working on VFX and the film’s titles, it was a pleasure to once again be working with producer Matthew Wilkins of Stigma Films who is producing Muscle along with Ed Barratt and Richard Wylie of Hook Pictures and Fred Fiore and Eric Tavitian of Logical Pictures.

Keep your eyes peeled for Muscle’s release, we can’t wait to watch the finished film, judging from the snippets we’ve been lucky enough to see to it’s going to be a knock out.

The Man from Mo'Wax - Swifty Poster Printing

December 19, 2018 Capture Account
POSTER_2-V2.jpg
An early draft design for the poster.

An early draft design for the poster.

Part of what enabled James Lavelle to grow his record label Mo’Wax into an artist-signing and trend-setting powerhouse was a strong visual identity. By working with artists and designers like Futura, 3D (Robert Del Naja), Ben Drury and Ian ‘Swifty’ Swift, James curated an urban aesthetic that married graffiti pop-art with abstract cosmic psychedelia.

It made sense, therefore, for us to ask Swifty - the original Mo’Wax designer - to create a poster for The Man from Mo’Wax.

His design incorporates trademark Mo’Wax design elements to resurrect the label’s funky 90s style. The vertical title stripe (aka obi strip) on the left is a throwback to the way that artists’ names would be presented on Mo’Wax record sleeves. The central design adapts the title artwork of the original The Man from U.N.C.L.E - the 60s TV show that was an early piece of inspiration for James’ musical collective U.N.K.L.E.

youtube thumbnail 3.png

Once the design was ready we sent it to artist and screen printer Luke Pantelidou of Studio LP, who silk-screened 100 numbered and limited edition prints. Here he is in action:

Luke had this to say about the process:

There were some challenges in producing the print. One of the main hurdles we had was the very fine text and details in the logos that run along the bottom of the film poster. This is usually very small in nature but it was even more of a challenge as the poster was to be printed at half size. I did a few test prints and wasn’t happy with the first results. Capture made some fine tuning adjustments to the text and logos on the black layer and I advised them to change inks to a slower drying system. With those adjustments and by creating a new stencil on a higher mesh count screen, I managed to pull out all the detail on the poster.

47084548_2211163662493578_7433525226056450048_o.jpg
47035703_2211163582493586_3493431492674060288_o.jpg
47152450_2211163612493583_8421429276787605504_o.jpg

The inks we finally used were Swiss made Lascaux studio acrylics which are a very high quality artists standard ink range with excellent pigmentation and great permanence and lightfast qualities.  The paper Capture decided on was Fabriano 5, a beautifully made paper with a brilliant white finish and a good weight for printing. A perfect compliment to the bold colours chosen.

I love the printing process. The anticipation when seeing that final colour go down and then lifting the finished print of the bed and seeing it in all its glory is a real buzz. I love that you can screen print all sorts of images in this medium. It lends itself equally well to sharp computer graphics, hand-drawn line illustrations and photographic images. I also like that it’s a hands-on process. There’s a physical aspect to it which beats sitting on your arse all day staring at a computer screen! - Luke Pantelidou

KCRW 89.9FM + Spaceland Presents The Man from Mo'Wax L.A. Premiere

October 20, 2018 Capture Account
2018_1020_192706-0_LJS_Graded.jpg

As with all aspects of filmmaking it’s always a team effort and thanks to our friends at Spaceland Presents, KCRW, Los Gaupos and The Regent Theatre, our feature length music documentary The Man from Mo’Wax had an amazing L.A Premiere!

Having opened as a cinema in 1914 the Regent Theatre was the perfect place to screen the film, as over time the building has also been used as a concert hall and performance space and meant the film screening and then DJ sets from both Money Mark and James Lavelle could all happen in the same space!

2018_1020_195207-0_LJS_Saved_For_Web.jpg

To start the night Jonathan Rudnik from Los Guapos introduced the film, James Lavelle and two of the film’s producers; Brian A. Hoffman and M J McMahon.

2018_1020_200540-0_LJS_Saved_for_Web.jpg

Born and bred in L.A., it was great for Brian to get to watch the film in his hometown, having previously travelled as far as Melbourne and London in the past with the film across it’s festival run.

Another person who didn’t have to travel far for the screening was Mo’Wax alumni Money Mark who had a lovely reunion with James Lavelle before playing an impromptu DJ set which featured him scratching some Victorian sheet music!

Simon and Ash are happily installed in our editing suite and working away on the cut.

This is the second time that Simon has collaborated with Capture - we produced the opening and closing title sequences for his debut short film, Ernestine and Kit. Ernestine and Kit was nominated for the 2016 SXSW Grand Jury Award for Best Narrative Short - by coincidence, it was screened alongside Capture’s The Man from Mo’Wax at the festival that year.

Producer Matthew James Wilkinson of Stigma Films brought Simon’s short to Capture after enjoying our work on the opening and closing titles of his 2012 short Worm.

This month Capture has had the pleasure of hosting Inbetweeners star Simon Bird and editor Ash White as they work on Simon’s directorial debut, Days of the Bagnold Summer. The script was adapted from Joff Winterhart’s graphic novel by Lisa Owens. It is a funny and touching story of a 15 year-old metal-head trying to connect with his mouse-y librarian mum, and all the brilliantly excruciating awkwardness therein.

The Man from Mo'Wax Launch Event

August 30, 2018 Capture Account

Our debut feature, The Man from Mo’Wax, has been quite a journey but from the 31st of August it will be in cinemas nationwide! To kick off the release we had a launch event at the iconic BFI Southbank, a jam-packed celebration of music which was a pretty special night (if we do say so ourselves!). As the audience arrived DJ Lord Ant set the mood for the evening with a great playlist of Mo’Wax classics and before the film screened there was a Pitch Black Playback of three tracks from the new UNKLE album Lost Highway. Straight after the film Edith Bowman hosted a Q&A with the film’s star James Lavelle, director Matthew Jones and producer M J McMahon.

The night didn’t stop there, as the audience poured out of the cinema they were met with a set from Mo’Wax artist A J Kwame who got the after party going followed by a set from the man from Mo’Wax himself, James Lavelle who played into the early hours. The launch event was also the first place in the UK to have the official soundtrack and limited edition prints to buy and take home! We couldn’t have been happier with how the night went, check out some of the photos from the event and the Q&A with James, Matthew and M J below:

Joe Reynolds' 2 days back at Capture

July 6, 2018 Capture Account

Hey everyone it’s Joe Reynolds from Killing Thyme here! I haven’t seen anyone at Capture since I filmed Killing Thyme back in 2014. Whilst filming I was 8 years old and I’m 13 now and in only a couple months I will be 14! Because of this, I wanted to take the opportunity I had in the form of work shadowing to go and see everyone at Capture. Also, I am still really interested in acting now and when I leave school, acting is what I want to do. Therefore I thought that having a look at the kind of work that goes on in a production studio would be a great experience and give me further knowledge to help me when I’m older and trying to succeed as a professional actor.

killing thyme poster.jpeg

On the 5th and 6th of July I got the train into London to do work shadowing at the Capture Studio. At school we have been looking at life after school and how to cope with jobs, finance and other adult responsibilities. These two days were a chance for me to go to the studio and learn about jobs that I have an interest in.

joe editing.jpeg

My working day started at 10:30 and I met with Hen, Mac and Lee (Matt was at the studio on Friday) who I was really pleased to see again. I was nervous because, as a Year 8 student, I had never been to work anywhere (apart from acting). However everyone at the office were such friendly and familiar faces that I almost felt at home and I could relax!

Over the two days, Mac, Hen, Lee and Matt set me some tasks which I could complete alongside the booklet I was given by the school such as writing my own reviews of Hawk, The Girl in the Dress and Gin & Dry to post on Vimeo and IMDB – I thought all 3 films were great! Mac also helped me to develop my photography skills when I went to different parts of the studio and he helped me to try different methods to get the best picture out of each frame.

joe working.JPG

It was an amazing experience to see a potential future career of mine and learn more about it and also it was great seeing everyone at the studio again! I would like to thank everyone at Capture for giving me this great opportunity and making these past couple of days really interesting as well as incredibly fun!

On the 12th of May The Man from Mo'Wax took over Everyman's iconic cinema The Screen On The Green as part of the Everyman Music Film Festival. We were thrilled to screen a special preview of the film in the city we call home before its release later this year (the 31st of August to be exact)!

The film was introduced by director Matthew Jones and the film's star, DJ and underground music mogul James Lavelle. To transport the audience to the world of Mo'Wax before the screening and to keep the party going afterwards DJ Lord Ant played a set of 90s Mo'Wax classics. Liv Lovelle 'Special' Music Video Shoot

May 4, 2018 Capture Account
Liv Lovelle Logos.jpg

We spent a fun day shooting at Street Studios in East London with great young artist  Liv Lovelle for her new track Special. After a couple of months chatting with Twin about the possible music videos we could work with them on Special was the perfect fit.

What struck us about the track? Liv's beautiful soulful voice! And we weren't the only ones, the track was picked up by Spotify for their great playlist 'Sweet Soul Sunday' which currently features Special along with tracks from Leon Bridges, Sade and Jorja Smith.

With the acoustic feel of the soulful track we really wanted to create a stripped back video - which took us down a route of giving it a real behind-the-scenes feel. We wanted to show Liv with different styling and in front of different backdrops, but at the same time rather than just having classic heavily stylised visuals we wanted to show the framework of the video, so that included showing the crew, lighting, backdrop stands and everything in between! That way we could contrast the behind the scenes feel with more fashion editorial style shots.

As Liv is such a strong character and incredibly watchable, one of the key things we did is make use of mini-dv camera footage in between using our main camera (Sony FS7) to enable us to shoot on the hoof and catch more varied shots really quickly. As much as 4K 100 frame-per-second footage shot on a gimbal gives you great shots, with lens changes and lighting change, we made use of bits of down time to capture Liv with this smaller camera. We think this adds a really nice, personal element to the video and the fact the we had such a fun time on set hopefully comes through in the final video.

To launch Kele’s album 2042, BIG LIFE Management tasked Capture to realise Kele’s personal vision and concept for a music video for the track Guava Rubicon. “This Video will always be beautiful for me as its simply two woman of colour who are in love, no tricks, no gimmicks, just love. Sadly this is a dynamic that I rarely see represented in popular culture, so I wanted to represent as best I could” - Kele Okereke. Shot across one day entirely on location in Brixton, South London, the video takes you into the world of young couple in love. — “A SLEEK PRODUCTION…INTIMATE AND REFRESHING” - Fader Magazine — #kele #musicvideo #2042 #rubiconguava #redepicdragon #brixton
